‘‘HR PRACTITIONERS MUST SPEAK IN FIGURES’’- Dr. BASSEY

On Saturday, 12th March 2022, the HR Certification Centre had its first lecture for the 30th Cohort of the Professional HR program take off at the National Banking College. The administrator of the training institute welcomed 192 HR practitioners in the in-person and virtual orientation and inaugural lecture over the weekend.

Every six (6) months the HR Certification Centre prepares candidates to sit for the Global Professional HR Certification exams (aPHRi, PHRi & SPHRi). The centre has prepared close to 3,000 candidates over the past 11 years with an 82% success rate. The centre admits candidates each year on a quarterly basis running both virtual and in-person classes.

Pearl Amoah Amponsah, the chief administrator of the training institute told candidates that: not only does the centre prepare them to become Chartered HR Practitioners but also provides them with auxiliary training through their 6 months training on topics like Finance for HR Practitioners, SSNIT & Pensions Administration, Union and Collective Agreement, and Labour Laws of Ghana & ILO regulations.

Dr. Jeff Bassey, the Executive Director of the HR Certification Centre in his inaugural lecture also emphasized that the days when the HR department was seen to offer only personnel and administrative support are long gone. He stated that HR practitioners now must be equipped to play strategic roles in businesses therefore: ‘HR practitioners must speak in figures’. He said, ‘the language of business is accounting hence every HR practitioner who aims to be regarded at the strategic seat must have an understanding of basic accounting and finance for business.'

Both the virtual and in-person inaugural & orientation lectures saw HR practitioners across the country and different industries participate. After the inaugural lecture, participants were elated about the centre’s contribution to enhancing and growing HR practice in Ghana and Africa at large.

Dr. Bassey in his closing remarks encouraged HR practitioners to commit to a higher standard. He assured candidates that the HR Certification Centre was committed to providing them with the necessary professional assistance to ensure their success in the professional exams and career development respectively.
