"HR PRACTITIONERS MUST THINK BUSINESS" Dr Jeff Bassey

On Saturday, 11th June 2022, the HR Certification Centre had its orientation and first lecture for the 31st Cohort of the Professional HR Program take off at the National Banking College. The chief administrator of the training institute welcomed over 170 HR practitioners to the in-person and virtual orientation and inaugural lecture over the weekend.

Every six (6) months the HR Certification Centre prepares candidates to sit for the Global Professional HR Certification exams (aPHRi, PHRi & SPHRi). The centre has prepared over 3,000 candidates over the past 12 years with an 82% success rate. The centre admits candidates each year on a quarterly basis running both virtual and in-person classes.

Dr Jeff Bassey, the Executive Director of the HR Certification Centre in his inaugural lecture said, “the first way of ensuring that HR is positioned strategically to support the business is to understand the business we support as HR Practitioners. HR practitioners must think about the business and not HR”. He further opined that when the HR practitioner begins to think about issues such as globalization, intense competition, and how the organization retains returns on investment amongst others then the appreciation of these issues will help the HR practitioner make strategic decisions in recruiting, managing talent, managing compensations and benefits, amongst other HR functions.

Both the virtual and in-person inaugural & orientation lectures saw in attendance HR practitioners and business people across the country from different industries participate. After the inaugural lecture, participants were elated about the centre’s contribution to enhancing and growing HR practice in Ghana and the African sub-region at large.

Dr Bassey in his closing remarks outlined three things that prevent organizations from implementing well-formulated plans, the lack of leadership and strategic direction, the lack of employee buy-in and motivation and finally lack of skill and personal limitations.
