Personal branding constitutes your skills as a professional, the ideals you represent, and the values you find important and project.
Generally, the concept hinges more on the reputation and impression that people have about who you are.
Most practitioners and professionals we interact with share with us, that, more than ever, they appreciate the need to carve personal brands for their HR practice. The conversation always extends to what we as an institute consider, essential.
What are some essentials of Personal Branding?
Fellow Ghanaians! I mean, Fellow Practitioners and Professionals. In 2020, there was a mad rush for tissues and toiletries in many countries across the world. Shops and malls were inundated with patrons who visited and walked directly to the stalls that had these items, which hitherto, although appreciated had not received such prominence and significance. Media houses recorded panic-buying of toilet rolls amidst some other items including sanitizers, face masks, and face shields.
Shoppers, fearful of quarantine measures were stockpiling supplies for the period of isolation. Covid 19 measures had spiked demand for these products.
Interestingly, there was a classification for these goods, products, and services. They were described as essential commodities!
Essential Commodities include products and goods of which the supply when limited or reduced, will obstruct the normal life of people.
Many countries have enacted in their constitutions, Acts that regulate these essential commodities to ensure they are not subject to hoarding or the black market.
For the purpose of this discussion, we describe essentials as very important elements you need to consider in your Personal Branding journey. Like the classic on toiletries, you most likely know these but have not considered them that important.
1. Personal Branding is a Process;
Today it is easy to get everything almost now. You can actually schedule a vacation and sort out your Visa, tickets, and locations in no time with a good travel liaison. You take pictures on your phone and see them instantly, unlike Kodak days, everything is fast-paced and now-based. This era has seen fast food companies do amazingly well, dispatch businesses keep thriving and data has increased the speed of time.
Not everything is instant though. Your degree, your certification, and some others take time. Personal branding is a process; it takes time.
Be patient to wait for the results.
Do not be worried when some other professionals that have built their brand over time, are getting all the attention. They respected the law of process. Be patient and like them, you will grow to the level, where you will be the face of HR. Though it tarries, it shall surely come.
2. Personal Branding is Niche-based;
To make it easy for your followers to identify you, you first have to identify your niche, says author and publishing consultant; Samuel Agyeman-Prempeh. It is important to focus on what will distinguish you from the masses. A jack of all trades is great, but it’s challenging in brand building.

3. Personal Branding is Recall-based:
The ability of your audience or followers to easily recall your brand name is critical to your success.
You notice that most global brands keep names and make them easy to recall. It is deliberate.
Apple, Google, Facebook
These are simple or rather singular names, which for any person it is easy to keep, memorize and recall.
Two names work as well; Mensah Otabil, Barack Obama, Ellen Hagan, Jeff Bassey, Bola Ray, Lucy Quist, Captain Smart
Some do initials; KSM, KKD, KOD, BBC, CNN
It is important to know however that, the investment you make in the name of the brand becomes more.
