HRs MUST ALIGN WITH BUSINESS STRATEGY - Dr. Jeff Bassey

The HR Certification Centre took off with the last session of the Global Professional HR Certifications programme on Saturday, 3rd December 2022 with 140 candidates in attendance. HR practitioners and business executives across academia, banking & finance, hospitality, mining, telecommunications, insurance, and other industries were in attendance.

Every six (6) months the HR Certification Centre prepares candidates to sit for the Global Professional HR Certification exams (aPHRi, PHRi & SPHRi). The centre has prepared over 3,000 candidates over the past 12 years with an 82% success rate. The centre admits candidates each year on a quarterly basis running both virtual and in-person classes.

Pearl Amoah Amponsah, the chief administrator of the training institute in her welcome address congratulated the studying candidates for investing in seeking knowledge to enhance their practice as Human Resource (HR) practitioners. She also stated that the centre is on a mission to provide professional HR education, leadership development, and executive training in the African sub-region.

Dr. Jeff Bassey, the Executive Director of the HR Certification Centre in his inaugural lecture said, “HR does not exist for itself but to direct the HR department to meet business objectives”. He further explained that the challenges of today’s organizations and the changes in society for which HR must align are: Customer Preference, Technology, State Regulation and Industry Competition. “Therefore, HR must learn the business they support with all of its operating units to stay relevant”.

“The two key areas in running an organization are leading people and managing systems: when the HR gets the people bit wrong, other things go wrong in managing the system. I normally liken people to talent, and this talent will have to operate within an organizational system or culture. When the culture is not in sync with the good talent, the culture will have strategy for lunch any day any time. Fortunately, as HR professionals we are in charge of creating the culture in the system that must resonate with the strategic direction the organization wants to tow. Therefore HRs wield a lot of power in organizations” - Dr. Jeff Bassey
